6/24/2023 0 Comments World of MusicTwelve Starr Music Academy students received medals for their performance on the 2023 Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA) World of Music test.
According to the TMTA website, the purpose of the World of Music program is to introduce students to music history through the study of composers lives, music, and composition styles. TMTA produces 12 levels of World of Music books Each book contains all of the content needed to be successful on the corresponding test. Registered students are tested in the spring semester, and those who receive a 90% or higher receive a gold medal. Receiving a gold medal were Arizabella Alanis, Italia Barrera, Lauren Barrera, Erasmo Noe Barrera, Thiago Castillo, Arora Cantu, Lyzzette Hinojosa, Mariely. Lopez, Adalyn Perez, Chaniel Santiago, Brayden Solis, and Jimena Trevino. They study under the direction of Corine Maldonado, NCTM.

6/19/2023 0 Comments EnsembleSix Starr Music Academy students were selected to be members of the Magic Valley Music Teachers Association (MVMTA) Ensemble Teams for 2023.
To be accepted into one. of the teams, students were required to pass the Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA) Theory Test and perform in an audition. Selected students attended sectionals and daily rehearsals culminating in a costumed performance representing MVMTA at the TMTA Conference in Waco in June. The Starr Music Academy students who were selected to represent MVMTA as members of the Ensemble teams are Arora Cantu, Laurel Cantu, Raul Gonzalez Jr., Lyzzette Hinojosa, Mariely Lopez, and Paris Millan. They study under the direction of Corine Maldonado, NCTM. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Theory TestThree Starr Music Academy students were awarded Whitlock Theory Medals for their performance on the Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA) Theory Test administered this past February.
The purpose of the Theory Test is to evaluate students’ musical knowledge of and the ability to apply theory, aural, and musicianship concepts across a broad musical spectrum. The Whitlock Theory Tests are named in honor of Dr. E. Clyde Whitlock, a charter member of TMTA and a distinguished music educator and adjudicator. Each year the TMTA Theory Committee prepares tests for levels 1-12 using the guidelines set forth in the Student Affiliate Theory Syllabus and Student Manual. TMTA's local associations administer the tests each fall and spring in a professional atmosphere. Students receiving a 90% or higher will receive a medal. Brayden Solis received a Bronze Whitlock Medal on the level 1 test, and Arora Cantu earned a Bronze Whitlock Medal on the level 8 test. Jimena Trevino was awarded a Silver Whitlock Medal on the level 3 test. In addition, Jimena earned a Division Award for receiving medals on her level 1, 2, and 3 tests. In total nineteen Starr Music Academy students took this years' theory test, and all received a passing score. Starr Music Academy presented two recital programs on Tuesday December 20 at the Roma ISD Performing Arts Center Auditorium. Forty-eight students age four to seventeen gave solo and group performances on piano, violin, viola, voice, and guitar. Starr Music Academy is under the direction of Mrs. Corine Garcia Maldonado.
4/18/2023 0 Comments FestivalThirty-five students of Mrs. Corine Maldonado at Starr Music Academy were awarded Superior (I) ratings at the Magic Valley Music Teachers Association Festival this past November. The MVMTA Festival is an adjudicated event where students perform a memorized selection for a judge and receive comments and ratings on such aspects of their performance as musicality, accuracy, expression, and technique. Judges rate each performance on a scale of I to III with a I or Superior rating being the highest. All of the Starr Music Academy students who participated this year were awarded this highest level of achievement, qualifying them to participate in the Texas Music Teachers Association All Star Festival in June. Twenty-three students of Mrs. Corine Maldonado at Starr Music Academy participated in a live video-recorded production of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. The performance was a culmination of a summer spent learning about opera, staging, singing, dancing, and acting. Students aged four to teens learned lines, lyrics, and choreography, created sets and costumes, and sang and played piano and violin. Starr Music Academy seniors of the class of 2022 presented a celebration recital on June 24, 2022 at Valley Keyboards Miller Recital Hall. Leslie Favela and Faith Garza presented a beautiful program as a culmination of their four years of piano study.
1/1/2023 0 Comments TMTA ConventionTen Starr Music Academy students of Mrs. Corine Maldonado participated in the 2022 Texas Music Educators Association convention this past June in Dallas. The TMTA convention provides a wider musical experience for students than is usually afforded in private music study with recognition for achievement in various phases of musical education and activity. Students receive one point each year per activity they participate. These points accumulate towards the TMTA Student Affiliate State Participation Award.

To be selected, students had to pass the Texas Music Teachers Association theory test and audition for a spot on one of the MVMTA Ensemble teams. The selected students represent the best and brightest pianists the Rio Grande Valley. After two weeks of intense rehearsals, the MVMTA Ensemble teams presented costumed performances at the TMTA Convention in Dallas.
Congratulations goes to Arora Cantu and Emma Escobar from Group II and Laurel Cantu, Leslie Favela, and Faith Garza from Group III for their hard work and dedication. 10/3/2022 0 Comments Summer CampStarr Music Academy students enjoyed a week-long summer camp this past June with the theme "Hansel and Gretel." The students experienced Engelbert Humperdinck’s delightful opera based on Grimm’s fairy tale. They learned about opera, publicity and staging. The students ventured through a "strawberry patch" and nibbled their way to the top of the infamous candy house through games that reinforced theory, musical terms, musical form and opera. Activities included games, arts & crafts, worksheets and creating promotional materials for Starr Music Academy's own summer production of Hansel and Gretel.
