Eight Starr Music Academy students were awarded medals for their performance on the Texas Music Teachers Association Student Affiliate World of Music test.
The purpose of the World of Music program is to introduce students to music history through the study of composer’s music, their life, and composition styles. Students are tested in the spring semester over the information in the World of Music syllabus for their grade level and those who receive a 90% or higher receive a gold medal.
This year's medalists were Laurel Cantu, Leslie Favela, Emma Escobar, James Gonzalez, Elliana Hernandez, Mia Ramon, Jaqueline Saenz, and Chaniel Santiago.
Starr Music Academy will present its annual spring student showcase on Sunday May 19 at 4:00 PM in downtown Rio Grande City. This year's theme is Fiesta Mexicana. Over forty students age four to fifteen will sing and play piano, violin, cello, guitar and ukulele to traditional Mexican folk songs and original music. The performance will take place on the kiosk on Britton Avenue and 2nd Street, much like music has been enjoyed in public squares and plazas in Mexico for hundreds of years. Admission is free. For more information contact Corine at (956) 847-8477 or visit starrmusicacademy.com
Elliana and Katherine Hernandez represented Starr Music Academy in the Magic Valley Music Teachers' Association Spring Recital on Saturday April 13 at Valley Keyboards in McAllen.
Ellie played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Katie performed the original composition Easter Island Monkey by composer Joanne Martin. They were accompanied on the piano by their teacher, Miss Corine Garcia.
The girls are model students and have performed this year at the Starr Music Academy Snowflake Serenade, as well as earned gold medals at the MVMTA Fall String Festival.
Twenty-eight Starr Music Academy students took the Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA) Student Affiliate Whitlock Theory Test this past February in Mission. Twenty-six students passed, five earned Whitlock Theory Medals, four earned Instrumental Medals, and nine earned studio medals.
To earn a medal, students needed to score 90 or above on the exam. Whitlock Medals are awarded by TMTA to students who score 90 or above testing on their school grade level, and Instrumental Medals are for students who test at level four and above.
The following students were awarded theory medals: Alani Ballesteros, Alexa Barrera, Camila Bazan, Georgina Barrera, Laurel Cantu, Leslie Favela, Alejandro Garcia, Ayleen Garcia, Faith Garza, James Gonzalez, Victor Guerra, Alyssa Lopez, Ashley Ly Truong, Sofia Muñiz, Neolani Quiroz, Mia Ramon, Brizeida Ramos, and Ricardo Ramos.
Starr Music Academy will be moving to a new, expanded location during our two week Spring Break, April 14-28. We have loved being centrally located in historic La Borde House and will stay close by on Main Street in downtown, just one block from our original studio.
Our new location will feature an expanded retail space, two teaching areas including a larger piano lab, a teacher work area and break room, and plenty of storage for our instrument inventory and ever expanding library of educational music, books, games, and activities.
Starr Music Academy’s new address will be 505A E. Main Street in the Hernandez Building complex. It is conveniently accessible from Main Street for easy student drop off, and features dedicated parking at the rear entrance from the alley, as well as overflow parking on Lopez Street. A beautiful garden and bright airy spaces make our new home the perfect place to learn music with friends.
Our expanded facilities will enable us to eventually grow our teaching staff to accommodate even more students! We are so grateful to the staff at La Borde House for making us feel so at home in our original historic location. We plan to continue making music in Starr County for years to come.
